Good morning, everyone, from the glass case of emotions that I am currently encased in. The long anticipated Avengers: Infinity War trailer finally debuted this morning on Good Morning America, sending Marvel fans into countless existential spirals, from pre-mourning their faves to screaming over Thanos to WTF-ing over Vision not being cherry red anymore. The one thing, though, that none of us were emotionally prepared for? The emerging theories that beloved prince of snark and sweet summer child Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, is going to die in Avengers: Infinity War, despite a fandom that wants to protect him at all costs.
At first this theory may sound downright absurd — for starters, Tom Holland will star in the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel set for release in 2019, which will take place after Avengers: Infinity War and the as-of-yet untitled Avengers 4. It would be pretty hard to have another Spider-Man movie if Spider-Man was, uh, dead (and it's a wee bit too soon to expect Miles Morales, his successor in the comics, to take up the webs). The key to this fan theory isn't that Peter Parker will die permanently; it's that he'll die, and something — namely, the Time Stone of the Infinity Stones Thanos is trying to collect — will bring him back to life.
The theory is especially prevalent on Tumblr, where users have noted two especially chilling moments in the Avengers: Infinity War trailer. In the first, we see Thanos knock Spider-Man into the ground with a hand around his neck. In the second, we see Tony Stark out of his Iron Man suit, holding a limp hand that at first glance looks like his own — but, as a few eagle-eyed (and deeply concerned) fans have pointed out, could very well belong to one Peter Parker.
Another reason why this might not be too far-fetched of a theory: obviously, these are the last films for some members of the MCU. Many of the OG Avengers' contracts are running out, leading many to believe that they will be killed off in one of these two upcoming ensemble films. It would be a bit anticlimactic for any of these beloved heroes to die in the first round of fighting against Thanos, which has led a lot of fans to believe that the original Avengers will be relatively safe in the first part of Infinity War — which means Marvel needs other ways to raise the stakes.
Namely, they need to be able to have that emotional poignance of loss without it actually being permanent. And what easier way to pull at fans' heartstrings and raise aforementioned stakes than to compromise our favorite churro-loving, emoji-texting smol bean from Queens?
So how exactly would Marvel recover from killing off a literal child when the Peter Parker Protection Squad is, perhaps, more terrifying than Thanos? Assuming that the Infinity Stones are, in fact, fully collected toward the end of the film (gulp), fans are theorizing that Tony Stark himself would pick up the Infinity Stone gauntlet and use the Time stone to reverse what happened, and save Peter (or anyone else who may have prematurely died in the first film). Tony Stark has wielded the gauntlet in the comics before, and, seeing as we will likely be saying goodbye to this character, it would be a fitting exit to have him wield the scary space version of his own Iron Man gauntlets at least once before the MCU kills him off. (I'm typing this very cavalierly, but trust, I am Not OK.)
In any case, there's probably no reason to panic, because of the announced Spider-Man sequel (and the third movie that Tom Holland went ahead and announced in a press interview, much to Marvel's chagrin). Just make sure you go into the theater emotionally prepared for anything to happen to any one of your faves, because with the Infinity Gauntlet around and Thanos tearing up our big blue planet, none of the normal rules in the MCU apply.
Avengers: Infinity War is almost here. As is always the case with new Marvel flicks, there are plenty of rumors about which new heroes will get introduced, what cameos we should expect, and what the movie will mean for the company’s overall cinematic universe.
Here’s a closer look at seven rumors currently circulating about Infinity War.
1. The movie may introduce a new, much-anticipated hero
Brie Larson confirms she will play Captain Marvel. | Brie Larson via Instagram
Moviegoers may be meeting another long-awaited fan favorite in Infinity War. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo teased that the third sequel for the team of heroes will add yet another new name to Marvel’s already crowded roster. As Anthony Russo recently confirmed to Yahoo Movies, the directors have their “hands full trying to tell the story we have with our pre-existing characters” but “that’s not to say we’re not going to introduce a new character.”
So who might this new hero be? The most obvious and widely rumored pick is Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel (teased in an Instagram post above), who will get her own solo movie in 2019. Still, the Russo brothers have refused to confirm the theory, saying, “That’s one we’re going to have to plead the Fifth on.” At this time, it seems unlikely that we’ll get more than a cameo appearance from Larson’s heroine.
2. It has a stunningly big budget

Between the star-studded casts and the costly production, no Marvel movie ever comes cheap. Infinity War is no exception, given its long lineup of stars and international locations. Even so, fans will likely be taken back by the blockbuster’s huge rumored budget.
According to recent reports, the massive film will boast a $1 billion production budget. Per ComicBook.com, the expansive costs will likely be split between two projects: Avengers: Infinity War and the film’s follow-up a year later. If split evenly, that means Infinity War alone will cost a whopping $500 million.
3. Bucky Barnes may return

Another name potentially included on Infinity War‘s long roster? None other than the Winter Soldier himself, Bucky Barnes (played by Sebastian Stan). Though his possible appearance wasn’t addressed by the Russo brothers, his involvement in the upcoming movie was seemingly confirmed in an August 2016 article from The Hollywood Reporter about Stan’s thriller, We Have Always Lived in the Castle.
As /Film first noticed, the article casually notes: “Stan is coming off of Captain America: Civil War, one of the year’s more acclaimed movies that has grossed over $1.1 billion worldwide. The actor, who recently wrapped the indie I’m Not Here with Maika Monroe and J.K. Simmons, will shoot Avengers: Infinity War early next year.”

The Russo brothers were formerly producers on the show and have made fun nods to the comedy in both of their movies — including very brief cameos by Community actors D.C. Pierson, Daniel Pudi (seen in the video above), and Jim Rash.

It looks like that tradition will continue, as Joe Russo told CinemaBlend in 2016. “We’re literally in that phase of the pre-production where we start thinking about those kinds of things, and right now we’re looking for the right part to see who’s a match for the next cameo,” he said. Which Community vet will get the gig remains to be seen.
5. Thanos will kill at least one major MCU character
There have been rumors that an important Marvel figure (or two) will die in the upcoming Infinity War. After all, with such a huge cast of characters, it seems somewhat inevitable that at least one will meet his or her demise.
Marvel Studios president, Kevin Feige, seemed to hint as much while talking about the film in February 2017. “Avengers: Infinity War is the culmination of the entire Marvel cinematic universe, as started in 2008 with the release of Iron Man 1,” Feige said, later adding, “Thanos shows us why he is the biggest, the best, the baddest villain we have ever had.”
Whether or not someone actually dies at the hands of Thanos — and if so, who — remains to be seen. Of course, fans are already busy speculating which of the many characters could be the big bad’s victim. Among the most oft-mentioned names are Vision (who holds the powerful Mind Stone that Thanos will need to complete the Infinity Gauntlet), Gamora, and Captain America. We’ll have to stay tuned to see whether any of these rumors come to fruition in the film.
6. Valkyrie might appear

It seems like every significant character who has ever been in a Marvel movie will appear in Infinity War. Case in point? A new rumor suggests that Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie, who will make her debut in the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok, will also be showing up in the Avengers sequel.
Talk that Thompson could appear in the film surfaced after the actress posed for a selfie in Edinburgh, Scotland, where the movie is filming. Thompson took some time to comment, but did eventually confirm her appearance.
7. The film will mark a new beginning for the MCU
Avengers Endgame Cast
We already know that Infinity War will mark an end to over a decade’s worth of storylines in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the Russo brothers recently teased that the movie will also be a starting point for a new chapter. As Anthony Russo told IGN:
I can’t get into too much detail about who we’re introducing, but these two movies are intended to be the culmination of everything that has happened in the MCU since the very first Iron Man movie. In being a culmination, these movies are in some ways going to be an end to certain things, and in some ways, they’re going to be the beginning of certain things.

As for what exactly those “beginnings” might be, the Russo brothers haven’t elaborated, but Anthony did make a point of assuring fans that they are striving to make every character choice “feel organic to the storytelling.”
Avengers: Infinity Waris scheduled to hit theaters on April 27, 2018.
